What we do
At Substrate Media, we use fungi as a lens to platform cultural, agricultural, and food practices that drive positive change. Our focus is on revealing unseen networks connecting culture, the environment, and farming systems.
Through film and mixed media, we highlight conflicts and harmony between humanity and nature. Our first project takes us to Japan, exploring the Satoyama tradition of log-grown Shiitake mushrooms—a practice tied to sustainable land stewardship and cultural heritage, but threatened by industrialization and the pressures of modern capitalism and material gain.
